New Squash Players

New to squash? Congratulations on choosing what has been rated the world's "healthiest sport". New York has a vibrant and active squash community. You won't be a beginner for long!

Where to Play
Fitness cubs all over New York City and the surrounding area have squash courts. Some of these clubs also have weekly round robins that are open to non-members.

Squash Gear
To get started, you'll need a squash racquet, safety goggles, indoor court shoes, and a ball. Check out our listings for some of the best local stores and websites to buy squash equipment.

Lessons
Even if you're an advanced player, the best way to improve your game is by taking a few lessons with a pro. Ask the teaching pro at your club. If you're not a member of a squash club yet, don't worry -- many clubs will allow non-members to take lessons.

Clinics
New York Squash holds clinics and round robins for members throughout the year. Check the Season Calendar for information on upcoming events.

How to Find a Partner
Start by asking your club teaching pro if there are other members at your skill level. Many squash clubs have bulletin boards where you can post a "looking for a match" note with your name/contact info. You can also use US Squash's Find a Match system to find a partner at your skill level.

Tournaments
Is your game ready for some competition? Sign up for one of the many one-day or weekend tournaments happening throughout the season. If it's your first tournament, start with the lowest division, which is usually 2.5 or 3.0.

League
The NY Squash city-wide squash league is a great way to meet new squash partners, improve your game, and visit other fitness clubs. The league runs from November-April and fitness clubs around the city have teams (you must be a member of a club to participate on its team).

League levels appropriate for novice players are the Men's 3.0 divison (Tuesday night) and the combined Women's 3.0/4.0 division (Wednesday night).

Judging Your Skill Level
Signing up for a tournament or league and not sure what 'skill level' you are? Review the Characteristics of Skill Levels, or ask the teaching pro at your local squash club to give you an idea of your skill level.
