MSRA Referee Clinic #1

In anticipation of a busy year of competitive and fun league and tournament matches, the MSRA will be offering a series of refreee clinics during the course of the year. These clinics are designed for the new or novice player who wants to gain a better understanding of the rules of squash, including clarification of lets vs strokes, and how to referee a game; a critical skill for tournament participation.

The format of the clinic will involve brief discussion and clarification of rules, on court tutorials and round robin play. Each clinic will be limited to a small group of 15 to allow for personal attention.

Event Organizer Report: Sunday's torrential did not prevent 13 local squash players from attending the MSRA's refereeing clinic on Dec. 13 at the Uptown NYSC.  Attendees ranged from strong 4.5 players to two absolute beginners (who made the advisable move of learning the rules as a first step to playing)!  Certified referee Beth Rasin, assisted by University Club 5.5 player Ted Clark, conducted the clinic.

Beth began by covering the essential responsibilities of referees and markers.  Then, as might be expected, the majority of the clinic covered the intricacy of lets and strokes.  Beth and Ted walked the attendees through the proper steps a referee should when make correct call, including re-enacting specific players questions with an on-court walk through. We even got into clarifications of some of the lesser known rules that sometimes effect play. For example, would you know the proper call when a racquet is dropped? The clinic concluded with participants playing a round-robin while the other attendees refereed and marked the games.
