2005 Winner:
Libby Welch
Libby is widely admired in the squash community, not only because of her squash talents, but also the drive and enthusiasm she has for the sport. For those who don’t know, Libby is the US women’s chairperson and helps to fundraise and plan events for the US women’s team selection. A couple of years ago she approached the MSRA Board about bringing the 2004 Howe Cup to New York. With a nod of approval from the Board, Libby set together organizing a tournament committee to help with the planning of the event. On top of planning the Howe Cup, Libby was also helping to organize the USSRA centennial event in New York and pregnant with her second child. The Howe Cup was Libby’s first experience as a tournament director and because of her efforts (website development, fund raising, t-shirt printing, stuffing goody bags, organizing cocktail parties and dinner, etc.) the event was a huge success. The event had the highest number of players ever (over 140). It also introduced a doubles event for the first time, which will continue at the 2005 Howe Cup in Philadelphia. At the end of the event there was nothing but praise from all players.
