Report

The Season Opener, October 3-4, 2003
by Zoë Brunson, Tournament Director

The MSRA’s new season kicked off at the Printing House on their brand new courts. Sixty-six players took part in this opening event. As minds and bodies started rolling into squash mode, the level of competition rose.

Joanna Snyder, a junior from CT, outplayed Kathy Mintz, from the Printing House, in the final of the women’s draw of eight.

In the men’s 5.5 final, Huw Evans from the Printing House and the “home favorite” out-maneuvered John Musto from the Yale Club to take the title.

Eight men contested the men’s 5.0 draw that saw four Printing House players make the finals of the main draw and the consolations. The main draw final was a battle to the final point with Eli Slyder coming out the victor over John Gassenheimer.

After round robin play between five players, the men’s 4.5 final saw Jesus Manzenda put up a competitive fight against Dhiraj Bhagat, the eventual winner.

The men’s 4.0 draw of 16 saw battles at every stage of the draw. The final pitted two Printing House players against each other. It was another final that went the full distance, with Julian Eyles eeking out a victory over Ben Winkler as players started to tire.

The men’s 3.5 final was played in a similar vein to that of the men’s 4.0 final. Coming through the draw of 16 players, Adrian Picheny from Uptown clinched victory over David Puchkoff from the Printing House.
With three victories, Shayne McQuade took the title in the men’s 3.0 round robin event. The deciding match for 2nd place between Steven Horowitz and Dan Cushing was closely contested. Horowitz outlasted Cushing to take the second spot.

Congratulations to all players who took part. Thanks to Ralph and Chris at the Printing House for hosting the event. Look forward to seeing you at the next event!
