Report

The Sports Club/LA Autumn Opener, October 24-26, 2003
by Ben Desombre, Head Squash Pro at the Sports Club/LA

This new addition to the MSRA calendar enticed 52 players to the Sports Club/LA for the weekend of Oct. 24-26. Event organizer Ben Desombre’s tournament format guaranteed each participant at least 3 matches.

Tournament highlights included:

  • a big surprise in the 3.5 Quarters when Lamine Fikai (unseeded) eliminated the 1st seed, Andrew Linder (Adrian Picheny beat Tom Moore in the finals);
  • a great run from Brad Barr(unseeded) in the 4.5 draw, who in the semis beat Reidar Brekke (#2 seed) 10-9 in the 5th, but then lost 3-2 in a very close final match against Gareth Russell (unseeded as well);
  • Nick Monogenis came back from 0-2 to beat Joel Breitkopf in the 5.0 semis; and
  • in the 5.5 draw, nothing could stop Hugh Evans who beat Neil Helman 3-1 in the semis and Jay Warshaw 3-0 in the finals. Jay reached the final with a hard fought 3-2 win over Michael Scherl.

Thank you to the tournament’s sponsors: Michael Farahnick, DDS and Harrow Racquets.
