Harvard Club Women's Invitational, January 9-11, 2004
by Zoë Brunson

What a show Richard Chin put together with the biggest women's draw New York has seen in several years. Over 50 women, including a number of juniors, came together for a weekend full of fun squash playing.

Women's A, B and C draws were played alongside the women's elite event, giving all players the opportunity to gain inspiration from the five women vying for a spot on the US women's team. The women's A saw the return of several players who had been absent last season having babies or had been out of the area.

A strong draw of 26 women played hard with several of the later matches going the full distance to five games. With both finalists having played hard semi-finals, it was the young legs and creative shot making of Emily Park that clinched a 3-1 victory over Julie Lillien.

The women's B saw competitive play from all 16 entrants. In one semi-final, with the games tied at 1-1, Claire Hsu fought back from 4-7 down to eventually win the game 10-8 and take a 2-1 lead in games. However, the third game seemed to have taken its toll on Claire, allowing Yeonne Moser to win 3-2. Yeonne's winning streak continued into the final where she defeated Mary Francis Ford in 3 games.

The women's C of 12 players included many first time tournament players and three members of the same family, with one of them going on to win the draw. While putting up a valiant fight, Campbell Sechrest's strong strokes and delicate drop shots proved too much for Dorrie Klisses.

The weekend was a great success, in large part due to Richard's great tournament organization. Complimentary comments were heard from all players and included the following;

“The tournament was great! My first really, but I felt like no stranger”

“The food was abundant and good throughout the weekend”

“Great t-shirts that were in women's sizes”

“There was definitely an atmosphere of team squash as compared to individual squash”

The comradarie amongst all players was clearly evident at this challenging and highly enjoyable event. Roll on next year's tournament.
