Report

The Big Apple Open, April 16-18, 2004
by Chris Widney, On-site Tournament Director

The MSRA winter season drew to a close at the Printing House Fitness And Racquet Club with the Big Apple Open. Nearly ninety participants spread out into eight main draws on the beautiful spring weekend of April 16th- 18th.

Melissa Bolyard defended her Women’s B title over Anna Guerrero while Amalia London won her first Women’s A’s over fellow Printing House standout, Elena Glasberg.

Young Jonah Peppiat held off James Green in the D final. Tim Sanders just kept going and going to outlast C.J. Follini in the C division. The B’s went to the now banished Corey Modeste, over Thijs Beuming, and the B+ went in style to Printing House’s most improved, Julian Eyles over the ever tenacious, Gablinger Ynon.

In the match of the tournament, however, it was Piers Smith overcoming his fellow teammates, exhaustion, parenthood and ultimately Attila Voltin to take the fifth game in the Limited A final. The A division saw Vinay Asthana solidify his place in the highest echelon of New York City squash with 3-1 victories over former champion Hugh Evans in the semis and Rob Endelman in the final to claim the top flight.

Thanks to all who participated for your tremendous energy and enthusiasm. The Printing House looks forward to our next event.

Chris Widney (On-site Tournament Director)
