Eddie Standing Squash Racquets Trophy (est. 1962)
for exceptional sportsmanship and excellence of play

2005 Winner: Ben DeSombre

Since arriving on the New York scene, Ben has been a strong supporter of the game of squash, looking at ways to increase player involvement and squash exposure, not only at the Sports Club/LA, but across the city. So watch out for new initiatives in the coming few years! But back to this season where Ben’s actions speak louder than words. Ben has been an active player in both the MSRA leagues and tournaments. In addition to organizing league teams at the Sports Club/LA, Ben led the men’s A team as captain and their number one player. In tournament play, Ben entered all tournaments held in the city – the only head pro in the city to do so – in addition to the Nationals both in the US and France (where he took the 40+ title). Ben played in several finals, and while he may have lost the final match, his attitude on and off the court was always exceptional. Calling his balls down or out and trying his hardest while keeping everything in perspective. He also volunteered to referee matches – something not often seen from tournament players! But what is most important is that however tired he might have looked, Ben always looked to be enjoying his squash and having fun on court. To cap off the season Ben was named as the assistant coach to the US women’s team and will be traveling with them to Brazil for the Pan Federation Cup this summer. A true sportsman and advocate of the game of squash.
